What Is Documentary Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography — also known as reportage or photojournalistic wedding photography — means I follow your day as it naturally unfolds, rather than directing it.

I work quietly in the background. I watch for the moments before they happen. I capture the real story of your wedding: the tears during the vows, the laughter that erupts during the speeches, the quiet glance between you and your partner that nobody else notices.

The result is a wedding album that takes you straight back — not to a version of your day that was posed and arranged for the camera, but to the actual day itself.

My Documentary Approach

I've photographed weddings long enough to know what's coming. The father's face as his daughter walks down the aisle. The best man's hands shaking as he reaches for the rings. The moment the couple emerge from the ceremony and the full weight of the day hits them.

I know these moments are coming, and I'm in position before they happen.

I shoot with small, quiet cameras. I don't use flash during the ceremony. I make myself invisible during the moments that matter most — and I'm fully present to capture every one of them.

I also set aside time for natural portraits — typically 20–30 minutes around golden hour, when the Hampshire countryside looks its finest. I'll guide you gently, but the emphasis is always on getting you relaxed and letting genuine moments happen, not working through a checklist of poses.

What to Expect on Your Wedding Day

Morning preparations — I arrive early to capture the getting-ready moments: the details, the nerves, the excitement, the laughter with your bridesmaids or groomsmen. These quiet morning moments are some of my favourite photographs from any wedding day.

The ceremony — I work silently and invisibly. You won't hear a shutter. You won't see a flash. You'll be completely present for the most important moment of your day.

Drinks reception — The most relaxed and spontaneous part of the day. Guests mingling, conversations, laughter, the natural joy of everyone you love in one place. I cover it all without directing a single moment.

Portraits — A short window, usually at golden hour, for relaxed natural portraits of the two of you. Hampshire's countryside and Hampshire's light make this time of day genuinely magical.

The reception — Speeches, first dance, the party. I stay until the evening is in full swing, capturing the celebration from every angle.
